POLNET Welcomes Two New Postdoctoral Fellows

We are thrilled to welcome Chanwoong Baek and Gunnlaugur Magnússon to the POLNET project! The scholars will contribute to understanding education policy knowledge and networks within and across the Nordic region.

Time and place: Sep. 1, 2020, University of Oslo

Chanwoong Baek completed his Ph.D. in Comparative and International Education at Columbia University with a specialization in Sociology. His research focuses on the sociological dynamics of the development and implementation of education policy at both macro and micro levels. At the macro level, he investigates cross-national policy attraction and knowledge transfer across institutional and systematic boundaries. At the micro level, he explores student motivation and belonging in schools and universities in different countries. His work has been published in the Journal of Education Policy, Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education, and Nordic Journal of Studies in Educational Policy. He holds an M.A. in International Comparative Education from Stanford University and a B.A. in Government and Legal Studies from Bowdoin College. He also worked in education policy research and evaluation institutions in the US and the Republic of Korea.


Gunnlaugur Magnússon is associate professor of education and senior lecturer of education and special education at Uppsala University. He defended his Ph.D. in Didactics from Mälardalen University in Sweden in 2015. His research has primarily focused on marketization and inclusion as political ideals of education and he has published articles in international journals on the topics of school choice and independent schools’ organization of special education, the professional roles and experiences of special needs educators, inclusive education as policy, on teacher education, and on teaching in higher education. He has also written book chapters about conspiracy-theoretical tropes in Swedish school debates and on other topics and has published several essays, debate-articles, and popular-science summaries in Swedish and Icelandic.
